Children, especially very young children, tend to idolize mom and dad. How often have you heard children saying they want to be just like mom or dad when they grow up? Parents need to set good examples because their children tend to follow in their footsteps. One aspect of teaching good decision making is leading by example. If you tell your children it is bad to smoke but smoke yourself, what kind of message are you sending? If you want your children to lead a healthy life, the time to quit is now. Similarly, if you teach your children good eating and exercise habits, they will grow into strong, healthy adults, but you have to hold up your end of the deal, too. No one is perfect, and parents are no exception. Being a good parent isn't about being perfect; it's about living the best life you can, not only for your children, but for yourself. Taking care of yourself is important so that you will be around for your children for years to come.

In the same way that smoking can lead to using an oxygen tank in 25 years, giving your children a healthy, loving and stable environment to grow up in can lead to a lifetime of success. Every parent only wants the best for their children, but the best doesn't come naturally. Parent and child must work to be the best person they can be.

Parents who are completely authoritarian will give no explanation for rules. Doing this can be disadvantageous for the young child's developing mind. According to psychologist Kendra Cherry, this type of parenting will lead to highly rebellious teenagers. She goes on to say that an authoritative parent who provides rules along with explanations for them will be more likely to raise a child who is a bit more level headed. Kids with authoritative parents learn the value of rules and regulations, and understand that they are necessary. Though it is not good to be overbearing in your child's life, meaning you should let your child make mistakes for himself. If you are protecting your child his entire life, by the time he is an adult he will not be capable of dealing with the emotionally frustrating stresses of everyday life. By the time a child enters into middle school they should be doing their own homework without help from you. Let your kid become an adult, for some people this is going to be really tuff, especially for the moms, but it is necessary that your child be able to take care of him-self or at least starts learning how. Hence parents should give time to their children and watch as they work but correct them appropriately. Throughout the numerous studies performed on effective parenting there is one consistent element that resides in all good parents, and that is they all lead by example. No good parent is going to tell their child not stay out late, and then stay out late themselves. Hence parents should set the perfect example to their kid by arriving home early.

Children emulate their parents. As a parent, you are your children's first role model. Pay attention to what you say and what you do around them and think about what kind of example you are making. Model the behavior and character you hope your children will adopt and live by the rules you set.
